Addergoole Titanic Society

15th April 2009

The Addergoole Titanic Society was established in November 2001 to commemorate the Titanic story of the “Addergoole Fourteen”, especially within the context of Addergoole’s history and how our locality has fared since.

The Society's main aims are:

  • Research, record and preserve information, literature and artefacts relating to this maritime tragedy, with an emphasis on Addergoole and other locations in County Mayo.
  • Communicate and promote Addergoole’s Titanic experience; so that people, locally, nationally and internationally are well educated and informed.
  • Ensure, through permanent and semi-permanent monuments, that the public are made aware, and reminded of, Addergoole’s place in this historic maritime tragedy.
A memorial plaque was erected in St Patrick's Church in Lahardane to commerorate our loss. Fourteen small trees were also planted in the primary school grounds to remember the Addergoole Fourteen.

We have exciting plans to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of RMS Titanic in 2012, including:

  • Village signage erected: "Ireland's Titanic Village"
  • A significant external memorial with off-road parking and Information Boards
  • Two stained glass windows for St Patrick’s Church on the theme of emigration
  • Launch of a song with a Titanic theme
  • Addergoole re-enactment: Fourteen people make the side-car and train journey and then board the Miles Morgan Travel "Titanic Memorial Cruise" leaving Cobh on 9th April 2012.

Why not be an Addergoole Titanic sponsor, benefactor or make a donation? Keep Addergoole's history alive! Please look at our sponsor and donation pages. Our Society meets in Lahardane on the last Tuesday evening of each month. All are welcome to attend. We particularly want to hear from the relatives of Addergoole's Titanic passengers living in other countries.
